Variegatad Rainbow Bush (Portulacaria afra)
Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' (Rainbow Bush) – is a sprawling, slow growing succulent shrub with bright red stems and a variegated cream and green ¾ inch leaves. It is a very easy to grow succulent that works as a great bonsai plant or hanging basket. The green form can slowly reach 4-6 feet in height with an equal spread but will remain considerably smaller in containers, and size is easily controlled with selective pruning and pot size.
Rainbow bush and elephant bush fall under the category of Portulacaria afra. They come from South Africa. The small bushes bloom with pink flowers in the spring through fall. Both varieties need bright light to grow well. Elephant plant and rainbow bush can cope with little water, making them low-maintenance plants. It was named Elephant Bush simply because it provides elephants with needed nutrients and water. Elephants simply pull the leaves from the plant for sustenance
